All About: Rome

Rome or Roma, as it is been called by the Italians is the capital city of Italy, and also the largest city in the country. It is also a great city to visit. Rome also serve as the capital of the Lazio region having an area of about 1285 km with over 2million residents, making it the most populated in the country. According to the European Union classification under city limit population, Rome is the fourth most populous city in the whole of Europe and at the same time the centre of the metropolitan city of Rome.

Location

Rome is located in the central western part of the Italy peninsula, inside Lazio.

History

The history of Rome runs through 28 centuries. While some studies stated the founding date of Rome to he around  753BC, some other studies are of the opinion that there had been existence of life and people on that site long before 753BC, thus making Rome one of the oldest spaces to be continuously occupied in Europe. The population of Rome began from a mix of various people such as the Latins, the Sabines, and the Etruscans, and with time, the city became the capital of the roman empire, the Roman kingdom and the Roman Republic. The city known as Rome today was firstly called the “Eternal city”, a name given to it by  Roman poest called Tibulus. The name was also taken up by the trio of Ovid, Livy and Virgil. At the beginning of the Middle Age, after the fall of the Western empire, Rome began to fall gradually under the political reign of Papacy, and it lasted until 1870.

Etymology

Studying from legends, it was discovered that the city of Rome was founded by two twin brothers Remus and Romulus. The father and mother of the twins, god Mara and priestess Silvia Rhea abandoned them and they were raised by a she wolf. When they grew up, they decided to both form a city. Out of anger and greed, Romulus killed Remus and named the city after himself, thus, the name Romulus was believed to have been the origin of the name Rome. Rome, which was the seat of the Roman empire was the most important city in the whole of the Western world when its comes to politics and wealth, all over a thousand years before the fall of the Roman empire in the fifth century.

Summary

In the whole world, there is no city that have equal histoy to the eternal city(Rome). A city that was founded about 2700 years ago. Some of the most important reign of Rome was as the Caput Mundi or the capital of the world. When emperor Nero and Trajan ruled the roman empire, the Cosseumis the one reminiscent of their era. In today’s modern world, most of the attractions of Rome is the piazza del campidoqlio, and the world largest churche saint Peter’s basilica. Some of the other attractions of Rome are: forum Romanun, Capitone hills, Vatican museum, Panthean, st. Peters square. Etc.
